Volunteer role

One Walk Manchester Event Crew

One Walk Youth Ambassador Event Crew volunteers bring lots of fun to our One Walk fundraising events. You’ll help the families who come to our One Walks find their way around and cheer them on while they’re walking around the route. Please note: if you are aged under 18 you are very welcome to volunteer with us. You will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is over 18 and will be responsible for you while you volunteer.

What will I be doing?

  • Helping the families who come to our One Walks, answering their questions and giving them directions around the Event Village.
  • Directing walkers along the One Walk route to make sure they go the right way.
  • Cheering on walkers at the start of the One Walk and along the route to keep them motivated.
  • Handing out One Walk medals to walkers when they finish their walk.

What skills or experience do I need?

You don’t need any specific skills or experience – you just need to be friendly and enthusiastic, willing to help walkers and Breakthrough T1D staff members, and able to create a fun atmosphere at the event. We’ll give you all the information you’ll need before you start your role.

When do you need me?

Saturday 9 May 2026

We’ll give you the specific timings for the event you volunteer at, and shifts can vary from 2 to 6 hours. We usually ask you to arrive for a volunteer briefing at 8.30am, and we aim for the walk to be all finished by 3pm.

If can’t stay for the full day, don’t worry. Any amount of time you are able to come along will be a great help.

Where will I be based?

Heaton Park, Manchester, M25 2SW

What training and support will I receive?

  • We’ll send you a copy of our Volunteer Handbook, which will give you all the information you’ll need to know about volunteering with us. We’ll also ask you to sign and return a copy of our Volunteer Agreement, which sets out what we’ll do to support you, and what we expect from you, during your time volunteering with us.
  • We’ll make sure you have the name and contact details of a staff member who will support you before the event, and of the person responsible for the event on the day.
  • We’ll tell you in advance what your role on the day will be two weeks before the event we’ll invite you to a pre-event briefing (online) to give you more information and answer any questions you have.
  • We’ll send you a volunteer event information pack. This tells you things like:
    • Where to meet us on the day, and how to get there.
    • Timings for the day, such as what time walkers will start to arrive and what time the walk begins.
    • What your role will be on the day, and a map of the route.
    • Some important safety information and contact numbers for the Breakthrough T1D staff members who will be responsible for the event.
  • We’ll ask you to read and sign our safeguarding guidelines, and also complete and return an emergency contact form before you volunteer at the event.
  • We’ll give you a Breakthrough T1D t-shirt to wear.
  • There’ll be a face-to-face briefing at the start of the event, as well as any role-specific training, and there’ll be someone on hand throughout the day in case you have any questions.
  • We’ll send you an expense form to claim back any out-of-pocket expenses (please see our volunteer expenses policy in the Volunteer Handbook).
