Whether you’re a professional, a creative, a tech whiz, or just someone with valuable experience, your skills can help us save costs and direct more funding toward life-changing research into type 1 diabetes.

What will I be doing?

At Breakthrough T1D, we believe that everyone has something valuable to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a passionate hobbyist, your skills, knowledge, and expertise can make a real difference — pro bono.

We’re not asking for traditional volunteering. We’re inviting you to do what you already do best — on your terms — to help us fund groundbreaking research into type 1 diabetes.

What skills or experience do I need?

Whatever skills, knowledge, or expertise you already have. All we ask of you is that you have a passion to help us achieve our mission of accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and better treat type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications.

How will this benefit Breakthrough T1D?

You’ll bring the skills we need to do what we couldn’t do alone — and together, we’ll go further. By volunteering with us, you’re not just giving time; you’re helping us direct more resources toward finding a cure and improving lives.

How will this benefit me?

You already support our mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and better treat type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications. Now you can support it in a way that’s meaningful to you.

When do you need me?

Sign up to join our Skills Bank and tell us what skills you have – then when we have something we think you could help us with, we’ll be in touch. It could be a one-off task or a project that takes a few weeks or months. We’ll make sure whatever support you give us fits in with your other commitments, and if you’re not available that’s absolutely fine!

Where will I be based?

That all depends on what you’ll be doing to support us. You might be at a community or fundraising event, working in one of our offices, or working from home. Whatever you do to support us, we’ll make sure you know where you’ll need to be and have everything you need before you start.

What training and support will I receive?

  • We’ll send you a copy of our Volunteer Handbook, which will give you all the information you’ll need to know about volunteering with us. We’ll also ask you to sign and return a copy of our Volunteer Agreement, which sets out what we’ll do to support you, and what we expect from you, during your time volunteering with us.
  • We’ll ask you to read and sign any relevant policies depending on what you do to support us. For example, if you’ll be handling data we’ll ask you to read our Data Protection and Confidentiality Policy, or if you’ll be interacting with children and young people we’ll share our Safeguarding Policy and Guidelines with you.
  • We’ll make sure you have the name of your staff contact at Breakthrough T1D, and that you know how to get in touch with them.
  • We’ll have a short meeting with you (either in person, on the phone or over Teams) before you start, to make sure you’re all set and to answer any questions you might have.
  • If you’re supporting with something longer-term, rather than a one-off task, we’ll catch up with you (via telephone or on MS Teams) regularly, to check how you’re getting on and to talk through any queries you have.
  • We reimburse all reasonable expenses incurred while you volunteer with us, so we’ll make sure you know how to claim back any out-of-pocket expenses.

How do I apply?

If you’d like to join our Skills Bank, tell us about your skills and expertise on our short form, or contact the Volunteer Team for a chat about what you can do and how you can help. We’d love to hear from you.
