About Barbie

Barbie worked closely with Breakthrough T1D and the community to accurately represent the condition.

  • Continuous glucose monitor (CGM): The doll wears a CGM on her arm to help manage her type 1 diabetes. It’s a small, wearable device that continuously measures blood-sugar levels. To keep her CGM in place, she has heart-shaped tape in Barbie pink, along with a phone that displays her CGM app.
  • Insulin pump: Attached at her waist, Barbie wears a insulin pump. This is a small device that automates her insulin delivery, helping to manage her blood-sugar levels throughout the day and night.
  • Blue polka dot outfit: Barbie wears a stylish polka dot top and matching skirt with ruffles. Both the colour blue and circle print are a nod to the global symbols that represent diabetes awareness.
  • Handbag: Barbie comes with a pastel blue handbag, perfect to carry any essentials, including her T1D supplies or snacks, when she’s on the go.

Seeing Barbie proudly and stylishly represent type 1 diabetes helps raise awareness and normalises the condition in everyday culture. She shows young people with T1D that they’re seen, supported and never alone.
