We’re thrilled to announce that our ambassador, actor James Norton will be joining the Breakthrough T1D running team, taking on the TCS London Marathon on Sunday 26 April 2026.

Raising vital funds for T1D research

James will be taking on the 26.2 miles marathon challenge in support of Breakthrough T1D, joining runners across the capital to help raise funds for vital type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. James, who lives with type 1 and is a passionate supporter of the charity, will help shine a much-needed spotlight on the life-long condition, which affects over 400,000 people in the UK.

James said: “Very excited, and a little apprehensive, to be running the 2026 London marathon for Breakthrough T1D. I’ve never run a marathon before. The notion of running 42km in one go has always seemed like an insane idea. It still does. However, the potential to raise some funds and awareness for this incredible charity makes it more than worth it. Breakthrough T1D does vital work in finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. My mother, my sister and I all have type 1 and our lives have been made immeasurably better by all the work Breakthrough T1D does. So please support diabetics all over the world by donating to Breakthrough T1D via my JustGiving page. Thank you!”

Driving the next breakthrough

Terence Lovell, Director of Fundraising and Engagement said: “We’re thrilled to have James running on behalf of Breakthrough T1D at this year’s London Marathon. Type 1 diabetes is a relentless condition – one that never takes a break and is often managed silently by those living with it. Every mile James and our incredible team of runners conquer will help raise vital funds for research and innovation, bringing us closer to easing the burden of T1D for individuals and families across the UK. We are deeply grateful for James’s commitment and proud to stand alongside him as we work to secure the next research breakthrough that leads us to a cure.”

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, autoimmune condition that can affect anyone at any age. For over 40 years, Breakthrough T1D has been on the forefront of advancements in research and technology, such as the hybrid closed loop (HCL) system; a groundbreaking algorithm that connects a glucose monitor to a pump, automating insulin delivery. Breakthrough T1D also pioneered the first-ever disease modifying therapy teplizumab, which delays the onset of T1D for up to three years. The charity is focused on driving breakthroughs that improve the lives of people living with T1D, and one day leads to a cure that will make type 1 diabetes a thing of the past.

This year, a total of 150 runners will join Team Breakthrough T1D, each with a personal connection which inspired their participation. Kevin and Mark from Nottingham are taking part in a series of challenges this year, including the London Marathon, in memory of their late father Tony.

Kevin said: “We are running in memory of our dad, who lived with type 1 for over 60 years, to support Breakthrough T1D and help drive the research that brings us closer to a cure.”

Keziah and her twin sister live with type 1. Keziah’s aiming to complete her first marathon alongside her mum, Robyn.

Keziah said: “My mum and I are running my first marathon hand in hand, supporting Breakthrough T1D because both my twin sister and I live with type 1 diabetes, and every mile is a fierce, love‑fuelled promise that this condition will never steal our future – a future we believe Breakthrough T1D can help deliver, where a cure exists and we finally get to live free.”
