JDRF has now rebranded to Breakthrough T1D.
Our name has changed, our mission has not.

Our research partnerships

We have partnered with several other research organisations to help us improve the lives of people with type 1 diabetes.

Breakthrough T1D UK type 1 diabetes researchers as part of a funded partnership

Why do we have research partnerships?

Research partnerships are a great way for us to pool our resources and maximise funding for type 1 diabetes research. Partnering with research organisations that aren’t directly focused on type 1 diabetes encourages more researchers into the field of type 1 diabetes research. These researchers bring with them new skills and expertise, which they share with other type 1 diabetes researchers. This helps to boost the knowledge within our field and expands the range of innovative research taking place.

Who do we have research partnerships with?

We have teamed up with other organisations who can help us in our mission of eradicating type 1 diabetes. This includes promoting type 1 diabetes research in Ireland through our partnership with the Diabetes Ireland Research Alliance, and driving research into cures for type 1 diabetes through the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge. We are also searching beyond the field of diabetes research to find the overlapping causes of autoimmunity across multiple autoimmune conditions through our Connect Immune Research partnership.

Co-funding research

As well as our ongoing partnerships with other organisations, we provide grants to people which we co-fund with other organisations. These include government organisations like the National Institute for Health and Care Research as well as trusts such as the Daphne Jackson Trust.

For example, we have joined forces with the Medical Research Council to fund a clinician called Daniel Doherty to complete his PhD at the University of Manchester. His research aims to improve the outcome of islet transplants for people with type 1. Find out more about Daniel’s PhD research project.

Our most important partner is you

All our research partnerships help the money our supporters like you raise for type 1 diabetes go even further. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to leverage our donations in this way. Donate to Breakthrough T1D UK today to continue to support our research.
