Imagine a world without type 1 diabetes. A world where no one has to worry about managing their blood glucose levels, taking insulin, or live with the constant fear of life-changing health complications. Leaving a gift in your will can bring future generations one step closer to that world.
With support from people like you, we fund world-class, international research that will one day cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications. We believe that research is the way we will reach a point in time when nobody must take insulin to stay alive.
Whether it’s technology that automatically delivers insulin, insulin-producing cells that can be safely transplanted, or a vaccine that protects everyone from developing the condition, we know the answers we need lie in research.
So, we ask you to consider the lives that you could change with a simple act of kindness. Could you leave a gift in your will to Breakthrough T1D and help us in our fight against type 1 diabetes?
Together, we can make a difference.

Margaret couldn’t believe it when her granddaughter Fleur was diagnosed with type 1, but she hopes a gift in her Will to Breakthrough T1D can help find the cure.
We recommend using a professional to ensure your will is legally binding. That way, you know your wishes will be honoured and your generosity will live on to help cure, treat and prevent type 1.
When you make a new will, simply ask your solicitor to include Breakthrough T1D. Our full charity name is Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Limited (operating as Breakthrough T1D), our charity number is: 295716 and our registered address: 17/18 Angel Gate, City Road, London EC1V 2PT.
If you have a large or complicated estate, or if you have complex needs – for example: trust income, property overseas, dependent relatives, or ongoing legal issues – you should speak to a specialist solicitor. Likewise, if you have concerns around mental capacity you should discuss with a solicitor face-to-face.
If you already have a will, speak to your solicitor and ask them to update your will to include a gift to Breakthrough T1D in your will. They will take you through the necessary steps to do this.
For help finding a solicitor in your area, visit The Law Society or call 020 7320 5650.
Breakthrough T1D supporters can make a will for free with makeawillonline.co.uk. A qualified solicitor will look over every will and helplines are available if you need assistance. To make your will for free, take a look at our Breakthrough T1D page on MakeAWillOnline.
There is no obligation to include a gift to Breakthrough T1D. When you make a will using this service, information on when the will was made and how much has been pledged is shared with us. This is incredibly helpful for us to plan for the future of our charity. You can choose to share your name and details with us too so we can get in touch to say “thank you” and make sure we keep you up to date on our work.
However you choose to make your will, we are very grateful for anything you leave us.
Once you’ve taken care of those close to you, giving a few percentage of what’s left to Breakthrough T1D is an inspiring way to create a world without type 1. This type of gift will retain its value over time.
You might decide to include a cash gift in your Will to Breakthrough T1D. No matter how much you choose to donate, remembering Breakthrough T1D with a cash gift in your Will is a lasting way to make life better for everyone with type 1.
You might choose to donate a specific item such as personal possessions, shares, life insurance, property or the proceeds of a bank account, as a gift in your Will to Breakthrough T1D.
For more information about the legal process, please read our frequently asked questions below.
Finally, we would love to know if you’ve left a gift in your Will to Breakthrough T1D so we can say thank you. You can always choose for your gift to remain anonymous if you wish and make a will online.
Making a Will is very important because it means your wishes are clear and legally binding. You can feel safe knowing your assets and possessions will be distributed as you see fit, reducing the burden for family and loved ones.
You can write a basic Will yourself. However, we recommend you seek the advice of a solicitor or will writer to make sure your wishes are legally binding. That way, you know nothing is missed and everything is arranged as you would like. It typically takes about an hour to do.
Before you visit a solicitor, you might want to prepare by making a note of any money, belongings or debts that you have. You may also like to jot down a list of your family, loved ones and any causes you would like to remember in your Will. Finally, you should think about who you would like to act as your executor.
It’s often the rich or famous who hit the headlines with a charitable legacy, but anyone can leave a gift in their Will to charity. Whether you choose to leave a few hundred pounds, or a percentage of what’s left after you’ve taken care of your loved ones, a gift in your Will is simply another way to support a cause you care about.
A gift in your Will means your care and support will continue to live on.
If you’ve already made a Will but would like to add a gift to Breakthrough T1D, you can make minor changes using a CODICIL. Your solicitor will help you to prepare one.
We completely understand, and respect, your decision to change your Will as you see fit. Even if you tell us you plan to leave a gift in your Will to Breakthrough T1D, it is not legally binding.
A share of your estate or a ‘residual gift’. This is a percentage of what’s left when all other gifts have been made and any outstanding expenses paid. This type of gift is especially important as it retains its value over time.
A cash gift or a ‘pecuniary gift’. This is a specific sum.
A specific item. This could be an item such as property or shares.
If you’ve decided to include a gift in your Will to Breakthrough T1D, you can use the following wording:
‘I leave … to Breakthrough T1D, the operating name of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Limited, of 17/18 Angel Gate, London EC1V 2PT, registered charity numbers 295716 and SC040123’.
It is possible to reduce the amount of inheritance tax you must pay, by making a gift in your Will to charity including Breakthrough T1D.
As of April 2017, 40% inheritance tax is due on your estate that is above the threshold of £325,000. However, it’s possible to reduce this to 36% if 10% or more is left to charity.
We recommend you confirm the current inheritance tax rules with your solicitor who will be able to advise you.
