JDRF has now rebranded to Breakthrough T1D.
Our name has changed, our mission has not.

Volunteer role

Event Crew (One Walk)

Our Event Crew is a team of volunteers who support us in making sure our Breakthrough T1D events run like clockwork. They help us raise as much awareness about living with type 1 diabetes, and money for life-changing research, as they can.

What will I be doing?

There are various roles available on the day, including:

  • Setting up in the Event Village before walkers arrive.
  • Registering walkers as they arrive, and handing out their t-shirts.
  • Leading or stewarding the walkers along the route to make sure they’re going in the right direction.
  • Looking after the merchandise stall, or handing out information about Breakthrough T1D.
  • Handing out finishers’ medals when walkers return to the Event Village at the end of their walk.

Optional: Before the event, you can support the local marketing in the run-up to the event, by sharing flyers and posters with local organisations and businesses.

What skills or experience do I need?

You don’t need any specific skills or experience – you just need to be friendly and enthusiastic, with a can-do attitude. We’ll give you all the information you’ll need before you start your role.

When do you need me?

Our One Walk events take place throughout the year. You can see the programme for the One Walk events throughout 2025 in the section below.

We’ll only need you on the day of the event, and shifts can vary from 2 to 6 hours. We ask you to arrive for a volunteer briefing at 8.30am, and we aim to be all finished by 3pm.

Where will I be based?

Our One Walk events take place all over the UK. Take a look at the dates and venues for our One Walk events throughout 2025 below. You can use this form to tell us which events you’re interested in volunteering at.

What training and support will I receive?

When you sign up to become a volunteer, we’ll send you a copy of our Volunteer Handbook and any relevant policies you’ll need to know about.

Before the event you volunteer at, we’ll send you a volunteer event brief, which will have details of timings, your role at the event, the walk route, and other event information. We’ll also send you an expenses claim form, in case you need it. We’ll give you a volunteer briefing and any role-specific training on the day, and make sure you have all the resources you’ll need. And we’ll make sure you have the name and contact details of the staff member responsible for each event.

You can contact the Volunteer Team at volunteering@breakthroughT1D.org.uk or on 020 3410 6084 at any time.
