JDRF has now rebranded to Breakthrough T1D.
Our name has changed, our mission has not.

Volunteer role

One Walk Leeds Event Crew

Join our Event Crew at our fun, family-friendly One Walk at Roundhay Park on Saturday 13 September. Help us make sure the event runs like clockwork and create a fun, welcoming atmosphere as the T1D community comes together to take on a scenic 5km walk, to raise awareness and vital funds for type 1 diabetes research.

What will I be doing?

There are various roles available on the day, including:

  • Helping us set up the registration desk and merchandise stall in the Event Village before walkers arrive.
  • Welcoming walkers as they arrive, making sure they’ve registered and have their Breakthrough T1D t-shirts and One Walk route maps.
  • Looking after the merchandise stall and sharing information about Breakthrough T1D.
  • Helping walkers find their way around the Event Village before the walk begins.
  • Directing walkers along the route to make sure they go the right way and cheering them on to keep them motivated.
  • Handing out One Walk medals to the walkers when they finish their walk.
  • Helping us to pack everything away after the walk has finished.

Optional (in advance of the One Walk):

  • If you’d like to, you can help us promote the One Walk by putting up posters and sharing flyers locally and amongst your own networks.
  • If you’re available, you can attend a site visit to walk the route and meet your fellow volunteers in advance of the One Walk event day.

What skills or experience do I need?

You don’t need any specific skills or experience – you just need to be friendly and enthusiastic, with a can-do attitude. We’ll give you all the information you’ll need before you start.

When do you need me?

Date: Saturday 13 September 2025.

Time: 8am to 3pm.

Where will I be based?

Roundhay Park, Leeds LS8 2HH.

What training and support will I receive?

  • We’ll send you a copy of our Volunteer Handbook, which will give you all the information you’ll need to know about volunteering with us. We’ll also ask you to sign and return a copy of our Volunteer Agreement, which sets out what we’ll do to support you, and what we expect from you, during your time volunteering with us.
  • We’ll ask you to complete and return an emergency contact form before you come along to the One Walk.
  • When you sign up, we’ll send you a volunteer information pack, with important information such as key contact numbers for Breakthrough T1D staff members; the route map; our meeting point and how to get there; timings for the day; first aid and emergency procedure information; and what else you can expect to be happening in the Event Village on the day.
  • We’ll invite you to an online volunteer team briefing around three weeks before the One Walk, to go through the plans for the day, and so you can meet your fellow volunteers and ask any questions you have.
  • Two weeks before the One Walk, we’ll send you specific details about your role for the day, and give you the opportunity to ask us any further questions.
  • There’ll be a volunteer briefing on the morning of the One Walk, before the walkers start to arrive, and we’ll make sure you have any resources you need to carry out your role on the day, including a Breakthrough T1D t-shirt to wear.
  • We’ll send you an expense form for you to claim back any out-of-pocket expenses (please see our volunteer expenses policy in the Volunteer Handbook).
