Family of three people in a park on a Breakthrough T1D One Walk raising money for type 1 diabetes.

What will I be doing?

  • Being an active member of the Breakthrough T1D 400,000 Step Challenge Facebook group.
  • Posting encouraging messages in the Facebook group to keep the 400,000 Step Challenge community motivated and engaged.
  • Being a cheerleader for the 400,000 Step Challenge community, posting messages and images to help everyone celebrate their progress throughout the challenge.
  • Interacting with posts made in the group (liking, commenting etc).
  • Supporting the Breakthrough T1D staff team in answering questions posted in the Facebook group by fundraisers about the 400,000 Step Challenge.
  • If you’d like to, you can sign up to take on the 400,000 Step Challenge too (you don’t have to fundraise but are welcome to do so if you wish).

What skills or experience do I need?

  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to use Facebook to respond to other group members’ questions and comments about the 400,000 Step Challenge and their progress through it.
  • Supportive and encouraging of other group members throughout the Challenge.
  • Respectful of other people’s opinions, particularly in relation to their diabetes management, throughout the Challenge.

Some important notes about this role

  • Please do not share any medical or diabetes management advice with other group members. If a group member has questions about diabetes management, please refer them to their own diabetes healthcare team.
  • At all times be respectful of other people’s opinions about their own diabetes management, even if you disagree with those opinions.
  • If you have any concerns about the wellbeing of other group members, please speak to the Volunteer Team as soon as you can.
  • Please do not continue any conversations with other group members outside of, or away from, the Breakthrough T1D 400,000 Step Challenge Facebook group (unless you are already in contact with them outside of the group).

When do you need me?

Throughout the 400,000 Step Challenge, which runs from 6 October 2025 to 14 November 2025

This is a flexible role. We’d like you to volunteer for an hour or two per week throughout the Challenge, but you can give as much or as little time as you’d like to. You don’t need to commit to particular times for this role.

Where will I be based?

Anywhere! Wherever you’re able to access Facebook and feel comfortable giving the fundraisers your full support.

What training and support will I receive?

  • We’ll send you a copy of our Volunteer Handbook, which will give you all the information you’ll need to know about volunteering with us. We’ll also ask you to sign and return a copy of our Volunteer Agreement, which sets out what we’ll do to support you, and what we expect from you, during your time volunteering with us.
  • We’ll ask you to read and sign our Data Protection and Confidentiality Policy, and our Safeguarding Policy.
  • We’ll make sure you have the name of your staff contact at Breakthrough T1D, and that you know how to get in touch with them.
  • We’ll send you a volunteer information pack with all the information you’ll need about the 400,000 Step Challenge and our FAQs to help you answer any questions you come across in the Facebook group.
  • We’ll have a short call (via telephone or on MS Teams) with you before you start your role, to make sure you’re all set and to answer any questions you might have.
  • We’ll catch up with you (via telephone or on MS Teams) every week, to check how you’re getting on and to talk through any queries you have about the role.

How do I apply?

If you are interested in this role, please complete this short form.

Those shortlisted for the role will be invited for a short, informal interview (via MS Teams), which will give us the opportunity to ask you a couple of questions and answer any questions you have too. We want to make sure that this is the right role for you and that you’ll be happy providing this support to our fundraisers.
