JDRF has now rebranded to Breakthrough T1D. Our name has changed, our mission has not.

Karen Addington, Breakthrough T1D UK CEO says:
“Today marks a defining moment as we embrace a new name that truly reflects the heart of our mission. On a global scale, we are investing in groundbreaking research to prevent, treat, and cure T1D, while also transforming everyday life for everyone living with it. We are breaking through the barriers once imposed by a T1D diagnosis, empowering people to live fuller and healthier lives. Our mission won’t stop until T1D becomes a thing of the past.”
We focus on what the T1D community needs now and next, accelerating world-class international research.
Globally, Breakthrough T1D has funded £2 billion into research. From developing the first engineered insulin over 40 years ago to making hybrid closed loop (HCL) a reality, we have driven breakthroughs in T1D since our inception.
We continue to make great progress. Our promising research to slow, halt, or reverse the condition and protect insulin-producing beta cells means the door to cures is firmly open.
Rachel Connor, Director of Research Partnerships at JDRF UK says:
“Our research is accelerating real change for people living with T1D. Breakthroughs are now transforming daily life with this condition and the pace of change is driving faster than ever before. Thanks to innovations like continuous glucose monitoring and HCL, managing T1D is becoming less burdensome for more people. Programmes like the ELSA Study offer hope for a better start in managing T1D. Emerging immunotherapies could bring precious years without insulin. Driven by global collaboration, we are pushing forward toward the day when we can finally cure T1D and make it a thing of the past.”
Until there are cures for T1D, we advocate for the everyone impacted by the condition. Our mission is to make everyday life better for everyone affected by T1D and we’re getting there by collaborating closely with the community to identify and prioritise the treatments and support that will make the biggest difference.
Whether it’s getting HCL into the hands of the people who can benefit from it or campaigning to increase services for type 1 disordered eating, we won’t stop until everyone is able to access the support and treatments they want, when they want them.
Hilary Nathan, Director of Policy at BreakthroughT1D says: “Advocating for people with T1D to have access to the best support and treatment is about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to manage their health in a way that truly fits their life. It’s about turning cutting-edge research and advancements into real, accessible options, so no one feels left behind. When people have the right care, it brings peace of mind, knowing they are supported and able to choose the treatments that are right for them.”
No one should face T1D alone. No matter where you are on your journey, our information can help you through diagnosis, understanding symptoms, and managing the condition to help you live a healthier and happier life.
We know that we’re stronger together, so we bring the community together through events to share advice and moral support.
By working closely with local communities and hosting events, Breakthrough T1D will help people to connect.
Dan Farrow, Head of Community Engagement at JDRF says:
“Living with T1D can feel isolating, but having the support of peers who truly understand your journey makes all the difference. Their shared experiences, encouragement, and empathy turn challenges into moments of strength, reminding you that you’re never alone. This is why we bring the community together. We want to encourage connection, share knowledge, and support each other every step of the way.”
