JDRF has now rebranded to Breakthrough T1D. Our name has changed, our mission has not.
Home > About Breakthrough T1D UK & our impact > About Breakthrough T1D > Our strategy
Our mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to treat, prevent, and, ultimately, cure T1D and its complications. Always, we are guided by a single purpose: As we drive toward curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.
To help achieve our mission we:
Through our international Breakthrough T1D network, our funding of UK researchers, our advocacy work with the NHS, and the support we provide to people with T1D, we know that we can push new boundaries and generate unprecedented progress in the next few years to prevent, treat and ultimately find cures for T1D.
Together, we are driving research breakthroughs toward a world where no one lives with T1D. We focus on what the T1D community needs now and next, accelerating world-class international research and driving innovation forward. Research was the inspiration behind the founding of our organisation, previously called JDRF, over 50 years ago by families living with T1D. Research breakthroughs are how we will make T1D a thing of the past.
We are proud of our international affiliation with Breakthrough T1D in the US, Canada, Australia, Israel, and the Netherlands and our integrated global research strategy that delivers on our mission. Breakthrough T1D’s organisational focus is and will continue to be, funding the most promising T1D research in the world while catalysing research partnerships to grow investment and delivery in UK T1D research.
At Breakthrough T1D, we help make everyday life with T1D better for the people who face it. We do this by focusing on what the T1D community needs now and next. We address the issues that impact the T1D community, break through barriers, and campaign to raise awareness of the need for better access to T1D treatments and technologies.
Research institutions are increasingly looking to charities like Breakthrough T1D to support them in involving people who live with conditions such as T1D to help define and shape research priorities. The rise of technologies and emerging medicines in the treatment of T1D means that the NHS will be reviewing how new treatments are used and funded to support better health outcomes and wellbeing for people with T1D.
We support and connect people living with T1D and provide information and guidance that make it easier to live and thrive with T1D. We provide expert, specialist information and advice through our website, including toolkits and a teaching stuffed bear called Rufus for children, to help at different life stages of T1D.
We also run community events for people with T1D to meet others living with the condition and are proud of our role in helping build a supportive community of people with T1D. We work in partnership with the NHS and many charity service providers.
Finally, our strategy focuses on how we at Breakthrough T1D can further excel in our operational practices, growing income, our skills, and impact as the type 1 diabetes charity in the UK.
