Volunteers’ Week is an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.
Volunteers make a huge difference, and we simply couldn’t do as much as we do without our volunteers’ support.
Our amazing volunteers generously give us their time, skills and experience to help us support the 400,000 people in the UK living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), to tell people about our work, and to help us raise vital funds for research into better treatments and ultimately a cure for T1D.
I’ve lived with type 1 diabetes for many years, and over the past year, I’ve taken on a new role as a Community Connector with Breakthrough T1D.
Volunteering isn’t new to me. I’ve been involved with my local rugby club for over 20 years in all sorts of roles. But as I’ve got older, I’ve started thinking more about what really matters in life. And for me, that’s helping others.
Looking ahead, I’m really passionate about building a local T1D community. Something like the diabetes online community, but face-to-face.
I work full-time as a chef in London, and I’ve recently started volunteering with the Events and Supporter-Led Fundraising team at Breakthrough T1D.
What I’ve loved most about volunteering is the positive vibe. I like to get things done in a great atmosphere, and the team has given me room to do that.
I’ve also found it incredibly motivating to work with a successful all-female team. I can see women achieving great things and it’s helped me believe I can do that too.
Knowing that my work is helping people living with type 1 diabetes is amazing. Honestly, I’m so proud of myself right now.
Whether you can give us a couple of hours occasionally, or a day a week, everything you do as a volunteer helps us drive forward the work we do and brings us closer to our vision of a world without T1D.
The Scientific Advisory Council assures and validates Breakthrough T1D's research decisions, policies and position statements, and support Breakthrough T1D’s community engagement activities within the UK.
Taking part in research is one way you can help us cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes, whether it’s by answering questionnaires, taking part in interviews or joining a clinical trial.
We offer a wide array of roles across research, policy, fundraising, communications, human resources, finance, operations and administration teams across the UK.
