Breakthrough T1D publishes ambitious 10-year strategy to accelerate type 1 diabetes care

We have launched a new 10-year strategy aimed at driving significant advancements in type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, treatment, and care. The strategy demonstrates our bold ambitions to continue to make life easier for people living with T1D and our ultimate goal for a world without T1D.

This new roadmap builds on our previous successes and outlines how we will transform the lives of everyone living with T1D, offering hope for a future with more effective treatment options, the opportunity for people to choose the care that works best for them and the rapid advancements towards cures.

T1D care is evolving rapidly, with advances in disease-modifying and cellular therapies poised to transform treatment. What was once a condition that could neither be predicted nor delayed now has the potential for a range of treatments, offering people with the condition more choice and better management.

T1D research and advocacy

Thanks to the research and advocacy efforts funded by Breakthrough T1D, disease-modifying therapies, such as teplizumab, now have the potential to transform the landscape of T1D treatment by delaying the onset of symptomatic disease and altering its course. At the same time, improvements in early detection are enabling timely interventions, while wider access to new technologies like hybrid closed loop are improving day to day life by bringing a degree of automation to people’s treatment.

The new 10-year strategy will build on this progress by driving faster, bolder research. By investing in innovative global research and relentlessly advocating for faster access to breakthroughs, we will ensure that everyone can benefit from the latest treatments as soon as they become available.

Working with the T1D community

But scientific progress alone is not enough. The strategy emphasises our intention to work hand-in-hand with the T1D community, ensuring that the voices and experiences of people living with the condition shape every aspect of research, policy, and care. It also prioritises helping people live well with T1D today by improving access to life-changing technologies, expanding treatment options, and providing ongoing support.

Karen Addington, CEO of Breakthrough T1D says: “We’re not just aiming to improve treatment. We’re committed to radically transforming the future of T1D care. At the heart of our 10-year strategy is a continued commitment to the T1D community. By working closely with people affected, we will ensure their voices shape the future of research, treatment, and care, giving hope for a world where T1D is no longer a daily struggle, but a condition we can prevent, manage, and ultimately cure.”

Greater investment

To realise our ambitions, we will deepen our engagement with supporters, partners, and the wider T1D community to secure the critical funding needed to fuel progress. This means recruiting more supporters, inspiring new advocates, and creating stronger collaborations with researchers, healthcare providers, and industry leaders.

With greater investment, we can accelerate groundbreaking research, expand access to emerging therapies, and deliver more support services, ensuring that everyone affected by T1D has access to better treatments, a higher quality of life, and ultimately, the hope of a cure.
